In an exclusive KaleidoScot interview, Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty, warns that the UK government’s plans to dilute or scrap the Human Rights Act (HRA) and the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) will adversely affect LGBTI and women’s rights.

Chakrabatri also warned that such a legal change will hurt the UK’s standing internationally and erode confidence in the sincerity of the government’s intentions to promote human rights internationally.

The Conservative government want the UK courts and parliament the “final say” on human rights and to this end they plan to scrap the HRA, replacing it with a “British Bill of Rights and Responsibilities” where ECHR being treated as “advisory” rather than binding.

Instead of ECHR, the UK’s Supreme Court would be “the ultimate arbiter” on human rights matters.

Last week, Nicola Sturgeon said that the government of Scotland would remain opposed to the repeal of the Human Rights Act (HRA), diluting or withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
