National Theatre seeks trans and non-binary voices for choir

ntsThe National Theatre of Scotland is looking for transgender and non-binary singers of all abilities to join the “Adam World Choir”.

The Adam World Choir will be a global digital community choir, bringing together voices from trans and non-binary communities around the world to be an integral part of the new play, Adam.

The theatre describes Adam as “a bold exploration of the experience of a young transgender person and an ambitious experiment with theatrical form, blending storytelling, classical composition and mass digital elements from participants [internationally].”

The play, directed by award-winning theatre director Cora Bissett (co-creator of Glasgow Girls, Rites and Roadkill), centres on the inspiring true story of a young Egyptian trans man by the name of Adam who moved to Glasgow. It follows his personal journey, his transition and his relationships.   Adam considers his journey to reconciliation, with himself, those closest to him, and the world as he knows it.

Finding no way to safely be himself openly in a deeply conservative Egyptian society, Adam escapes to Scotland. Finding himself, alone and in despair, in a small room in Glasgow, Adam goes online and asks the question: “Can the soul of a boy be trapped in the body of a girl?” What follows turns Adam’s world upside-down; the online interaction proving to be the catalyst to begin yet another journey – to become the person he always knew he was.

NTS will be presenting Adam as part of a double bill alongside a new Jo Clifford production, Eve – the story of one trans woman’s life, from an oppressive 1950s boyhood to the present, and a celebration of “the victories of survival and self-actualization“.

With a score composed by Jocelyn Pook (Stage Works British Composer Award winner in 2012 for her soundtrack to DESH), the Adam World Choir will be an exciting and vital part of the production. Choir members will also be part of the online choir forum where they can engage with people from all over the world, talk to the production team, and be part of the Adam World Choir community.

Anyone interested in being a part of the Adam World Choir should register as a member of the choir here before 21st March 2016. In June you will be allocated a part to sing with advice on how best to record your contribution. You will then be able to film yourself singing and send it back to the NTS.

All the videos will then be brought together to form a huge digital choir onstage. Performances of Adam will go ahead in Glasgow in November.

For any questions regarding participation in The Adam World Choir, please contact the Choir Project Manager, Leonie Gasson – leonie.gasson@nationaltheatrescotland.com
