Jonathan’s Coming Out Story

KaleidoScot’s Jonathan Welford shares his Coming Out story: “The first rumblings that I was gay came at the age of eight, I had a huge crush on my teacher. Mr Barton was a the first male teacher I’d had, he was in his twenties, and very hairy, a luscious beard and hairy forearms, when we did sports he wore tight white Adidas shorts, which gave me a good look at his equally hairy legs and perfect butt. It was astonishing what lengths I went to get noticed, it was from there I started my straight A school career. Needless to say, nothing happened with Mr Barton.

“From then on my attention was focused on men of a certain type, the hairier the better. Through my teens I had the usual parade of girlfriends through high school, however things surrounding sexuality were blurred in the 80s, I switched things up with sleep overs with teenage male friends, we’d normally end up in bed, experimenting and enjoying the newly forming teen to adult bodies. I always felt more at ease having sex with my male friends than I did the girls. There wasn’t any real coming out story. My Mother did the laundry and after a particular frisky sleep over weekend with as she was cracking the sheets into the washing machine and she just said ‘So long as you’re happy and you stay safe I don’t mind.’ That was that, and there was always a fresh supply of condoms on my bedroom dresser through my teen years.”
