Bear paradise in Scotland, BearScotsFest

BearScotsFest: Come and join the party!
BearScotsFest: Come and join the party!

We catch up with Graham Malcolm, president of Bear Scots, as he bears all about BearScotsFest, promising bear paradise in Edinburgh, Scotland, and grrr… everyone’s invited!

KaleidoScot: BearScots Fest? Tell us more… What’s it all about?

Graham: BearScotFest is the annual big (in so many ways!) October party hosted by BearScots in the historic city of Edinburgh. The three day extravaganza is aimed at gay bears, cubs, chubs and their admirers. It has been running for 13 years and is now one of the major bear events in the UK.

We attract people from close by to and all across the world. It aims to allow people to socialise and connect with each other. For many it is a good time to catch up with old friends and a chance to meet some new ones. The event runs with support from the local gay community and has a host of volunteers who give up their time to make it happen.

KaleidoScot: So, go on…  Give us a run up of all the events

Graham: The weekend has a range of club and party nights mixed with chilled brunches (always handy for hungry bears) and opportunities to see the city and places close by.

Our brave bear team takes over the whole of CC Blooms on Friday night and on Saturday the bears will play in their den, the atmospheric Caves on Niddry Street.

And don’t you worry about food, bears will be well fed with delicious brunches at Nom de Plume and CC Blooms.

Then for chilling out the Saturday afternoon we offer the bear’s afternoon tea at the Bakehouse or the distillery tour at Glenkinchie.

If you thought dens is the main place for bears, then I’ve got news, there is a swimming session at Glenogle Baths, although its sold out due to high demand.

After brunch on Sunday the bears head to Electric Circus for afternoon entertainment and the Mr. BearScots competition.

KaleidoScot: Sounds amazing, we can’t bear waiting, so, when and where is it happening?

Graham: BearScotFest happens from the 3rd -5th October and we still have limited weekend passes and tickets for Saturday night only at the Caves. It is easy to register for the weekend by following the link at www.bearscots.org.uk . Our website gives a full listing of venues and

information about the city of Edinburgh including accommodation.

We start off with pre-fest drinks on the Thursday night downstairs at the Street on Picardy Place. Registration opens from 12.30 pm on the Friday at the LGBT Centre underneath Nom de Plume. The guys can then head to the Barony Bar across the road, which is our host pub for the weekend.

KaleidoScot: Really cool, anything else?

Graham: We are delighted that Andrew Clarke from Moody Bear will be joining us again selling his range of quirky and humorous bear inspired clothing. This includes exclusive designs for BearScots. Andrew will be setting up camp at CC Blooms over the weekend.

Each year BearScots supports a gay charity and for the last few years we have supported Gay Men’s Health which works with gay and bisexual men in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Over the last few years we have raised over £4,000 for the charity. On Sunday we have our big prize raffle with the money going to GMH. We are always grateful for any donations.
